Story Behind the Song: I Want To Be A Trans Am

When my brother told me he was Trans and was going to tackle the full change, I was a little surprised. He then shared the long process he had been through. The therapy, the difficult relationships, coming out to friends and family. All of this was in service of being able to live his true self as a woman.

Years later with the process complete she felt so much better about her identity but she faced a whole slew of political and social challenges. This was very frustrating. At every turn people wanted her to defend all of these controversial stories in the media surrounding Trans people. She had never been a political activist so this was a foreign avenue and one that made her very unhappy.

I wrote this song to remind people that being Trans is about the individual and their journey. All of the expectations that follow are outside influences often merely tolerated by those individuals. If they weren't being targeted so viciously their lives would likely go back to the basics of, "Looking on the outside how they feel within."

Comparing the transition to a muscle car from the 1970's was a fun way to cast an inspirational aspect to a difficult process. It needs to be understood that completing the surgeries is not the end of the transformation, in many ways it is merely the start of a new journey. As a car lover and Master Mechanic herself, my sister loves the song and that's all that matters to me.
