Some of my friends and family were quite surprised by the lyrics of "Who Stole My Vape?" and understandably so. The song starts with an impromptu orgy where a young man lost his vape in a strange apartment. It goes on to describe plates of cocaine with an assortment of unknown people, some of them lovers. Then it gets to the heart of the story - Nepo Babies.
"Nepo baby" (short for nepotism baby) refers to children of successful or famous parents—particularly in Hollywood, modeling, or business—who have benefited from familial connections to start their own careers. - Google Gemini
While living in Massachusetts my girlfriend and I stumbled into a very large group of Nepo babies. They were mostly friendly for Massholes but we knew there was something wrong. We noticed that they didn't have jobs most of the time yet they always had money. They were in massive debt but didn't seem worried about it. They all had frighteningly huge drug problems.
We were invited to many weird all-night parties that involved playing cards or dice and there was always cocaine, liquor and nudity. Many of them had slept with each other, a cult of friends and lovers. We would leave for home and sleep it off so we could work in the morning. For some of them the party took place seven nights a week. A few were kind of homeless in that they would crash wherever they landed and move on the next day.
Eventually we learned that they were all born into financial privilege and had families who would dig them out of trouble every time they failed. Therapy, rehab and expensive lawyers provided a golden safety net for these coddled, spoiled and stunted people. At first they were a curiosity but after a while we just felt bad for them. It was an endless cycle that doomed them to lives without drive, purpose or meaning.
The song is a spectacle painted for shock value but underneath is a moral lesson of what can happen when an otherwise good kid gets bogged down by the misguided intentions of wealthy parents. And, you know, who hasn't lost a vape?
